OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management

The OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management is an Ofqual-regulated qualification for people who work in, or plan to move into, private or public sector business. It combines six mandatory units and 120 credits, so learners cover business strategy, human resource management, marketing, business law, management accounting and business start-up in one programme. Because the course is pitched at the level of Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree, learners are expected to apply and justify ideas, not only recall them. Graduates can progress to the OTHM Level 6 Diploma or apply for direct entry to Year 3 of a UK degree. Eduskills Training delivers it in the UAE as an approved OTHM centre.

Overview of the OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management:

The OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management is a 120-credit qualification designed for one year of full-time study, and it covers the functions every organisation depends on: strategy, people, marketing, law, finance and enterprise. Because it is pitched at the level of Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree, learners are expected to apply and justify ideas, not only recall them. Every unit is mandatory, so all learners build the same core management foundation, and the course aims to leave them business ready.

Qualification Objectives:

This Level 5 business management diploma by OTHM UK is designed to develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional confidence required to pursue a successful career in business and management. The qualification aims to prepare learners to become capable, independent decision-makers who understand key business functions, can evaluate management challenges and respond effectively to changing organisational environments.

The programme covers essential areas of business management, including Human Resource Management, Marketing, Management Accounting, Business Law, and Business Principles and Strategy. Furthermore, learners develop the ability to apply knowledge across these disciplines, understand business operations and explore the practical requirements of starting a new venture, including developing a viable business plan.

The qualification is suitable for individuals seeking to establish or advance their careers in private or public sector organisations, as well as aspiring entrepreneurs and future business managers. On successful completion, learners can pursue further academic qualifications or explore employment opportunities in business administration, management and related professional fields.

Qualification Structure:

The Level 5 Diploma in Business Management has six units, and all of them are mandatory, so there are no optional routes. Each unit carries 20 credits, 100 guided learning hours and 200 hours of total qualification time. The units move from direction to function to application. Strategy sets the frame, human resources, marketing, law and finance cover the functions inside it, and the final unit asks learners to use earlier learning to produce a viable business plan.

All 6 units are mandatory.

Each unit has 20 Credits, 100 GLHs and 200 TQT. There are total 120 Credits, 600 GLHs and 1200 TQT.

Total Qualification Time:

The Level 5 Diploma has a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 1,200 hours. TQT is a notional hours figure, which means it estimates the time a typical learner is likely to need to achieve and demonstrate the level of attainment the qualification requires. It is not a fixed limit, so individual learners may need less or more time.

TQT has two parts. The first is guided learning, which is time with a tutor, and it accounts for 600 hours. The second is everything the learner does as directed by a tutor but without immediate supervision, such as preparation, private study and assessment time. That leaves about 600 hours of independent study across the qualification. The table below shows how the hours are shared.

Guided Learning Hours:

Guided Learning Hours (GLH) are the hours in which a teacher, lecturer or other member of staff is available to give a learner immediate teaching support or supervision. The word immediate is what separates guided time from the rest of the TQT. For this qualification, OTHM recommends a minimum of 600 GLH, which works out at 100 hours for each of the six units.

In practice, the time counts when a tutor is present to answer questions as they arise, for example in a classroom session, a tutorial, a seminar or a live online class. Time spent alone does not count, because no tutor is available at that moment. Reading at home, drafting an assignment and preparing a presentation therefore sit in the independent part of TQT, even when a tutor set the task.

Entry Requirements for the OTHM Level 5 Diploma:

The entry requirements for the Level 5 Diploma with Eduskills Training in UAE have route from academic qualification or work experience because learners write assignments of up to 3,000 words, deliver two presentations and justify business decisions with evidence. Therefore, OTHM expects each learner to arrive with either a suitable academic base or enough management experience to work at that level.

Academic Qualifications and Work Experience Accepted:

Applicants for the Level 5 Diploma usually hold at least one of the following:

  • A relevant Level 4 Diploma or an equivalent qualification.
  • GCE A levels in three subjects or an equivalent qualification.
  • Mature learner status, which means being over 21 with relevant management experience.

These routes describe the typical learner, so applicants with a slightly different background should still talk to us before ruling themselves out. Qualifications from outside the UK are common among UAE applicants, therefore we confirm equivalence before registration.

The experience route suits people who have grown into responsibility through the job. In a business setting, that often means leading a team, managing a budget, supervising staff or coordinating suppliers and customers. Because the delivery centre must check this experience before a learner registers, we review it before registration. A current CV, a job description and an employer letter make that review quicker.

Age Requirement and English Language Evidence Needed:

The OTHM Level 5 Diploma is designed for learners who are typically aged 18 and above. English language evidence is the second checkpoint. Because the diploma is taught and assessed in English, learners who are not from a majority English-speaking country must provide evidence of English language competency. Non-native speakers who did not study their final two years of school in English must show one of the following: CEFR level B2, PTE Academic 51, or IELTS 5.5 with Reading and Writing each at 5.5.

The decision on acceptable evidence rests with us as the delivery centre, so please send your results or educational records for review. However, many progression universities may not accept alternative English tests, and learners are responsible for confirming this with the receiving university. Therefore, anyone planning to continue to a UK degree should check the university’s requirement before choosing how to prove their English.

A full diploma taught in English does not remove the requirement on its own, unless the subject was English language. Learners who studied the final two years of school in English are exempt, and we check that evidence.

Course Duration, Delivery Modes and Study Options in UAE:

Because the diploma carries 1,200 hours of total qualification time, the study pattern matters as much as the content.

How Long Does the Level 5 Diploma Take to Complete?

  • OTHM designs the diploma to be delivered over one academic year of full-time study, and it is flexible enough to suit part-time and distance patterns.
  • The qualification carries 1,200 hours of total qualification time, including a recommended minimum of 600 guided hours with a tutor. A full-time year therefore asks for a high weekly commitment, while a part-time pattern spreads the same work over a longer period.
  • A learner must be registered for a minimum period before being submitted for external quality assurance or certification, and for a 120-credit qualification that period is 12 weeks. Because credits are earned unit by unit, progress is visible along the way, and each unit has its own assessment. We confirm the timetable for each intake at enquiry stage.

Face-to-Face and Online Learning Delivery in the UAE:

Eduskills deliver the Level 5 Diploma in the UAE through face-to-face and online learning. The mode you choose does not change the assessment. Every learner completes the same coursework and is judged against the same criteria, so the decision comes down to how you learn best and how your work schedule runs. Face-to-face classes suit people who learn through discussion and want to test frameworks such as SWOT and PESTLE on real company examples with peers. Online learning suits shift workers and anyone who travels between sites, but it asks for more self-discipline, because no classroom routine keeps you on track.

Assessment and Verification of OTHM Level 5 Diploma:

Assessment for the Level 5 Diploma is coursework only, with no written exams, and every unit is judged against fixed criteria. Two units also include a presentation.

Coursework, Presentations and Word Counts for Each Unit:

Each unit has its own assessment, and OTHM gives approximate lengths, as shown below.

The six assessments add up to about 16,750 written words, and each presentation is equal to a further 850. OTHM supplies an assignment brief for each unit with specific guidance and marking criteria, and Eduskills receive these immediately after learners are registered. Reading the brief early and matching each criterion to a section of the answer helps learners avoid losing marks. The Business Start-up unit shows how the pieces fit together, because learners write the business plan in the coursework and then present it to seek stakeholder support.

Internal Quality Assurance and External Verification:

How we check every decision

  • Assessment: Our assessors judge each learner’s work against the learning outcomes and assessment criteria. They also keep an audit trail that shows how the decision on the learner’s overall achievement was reached.
  • Internal quality assurance: We quality assure those judgements at planned intervals during the programme, including sampling once one or two units are complete, so problems surface early.
  • External verification: OTHM verifies the outcomes externally. It also monitors our compliance with its English language requirements through the same process.

How assessment runs

  • Formative assessment: Learners receive prompt, constructive feedback before any final judgement, with time left to act on it.
  • Summative assessment: The outcome is provisional until the Internal Verifier and the External Quality Assurer confirm it.
  • Evidence kept: Evidence from both the formative and summative stages must be available at external quality assurance.

Pass or Fail Grading and What Learners Must Demonstrate:

Every unit is judged against fixed criteria, and the command words in those criteria show what Level 5 expects.

  • Pass or Fail: Each unit and the diploma as a whole are graded Pass or Fail, so there is no merit or distinction. A pass shows that the learner met the full standard in every unit.
  • Criterion referenced: Learners are judged against fixed standards, not against other learners. To pass a unit, a learner must provide evidence for every learning outcome and meet the standard in every assessment criterion.
  • The assessor’s judgement: The assessor decides whether each criterion has been met and annotates the learner’s work to show where the evidence supports that decision.
  • One missing criterion: A strong answer that skips one criterion still falls short. We advise learners to read the marking criteria in the assignment brief and map each criterion to a section of their answer before they start writing.
  • Knowing the standard: Learners should be familiar with the assessment and grading criteria from the start, so they understand the quality of work required.

What Level 5 Diploma in Business Management asks for:

  • Understanding: Criteria that begin with explain, describe, compare, differentiate or discuss test knowledge. For example, learners explain what business strategy means, differentiate between civil and criminal law, and compare the internal and external factors that affect human resource management.
  • Application: Criteria that begin with apply test whether learners can use a technique, not only describe it. In the Strategy unit, learners apply tools such as SWOT, PESTLE and Porter’s Five Forces to a business. In the Management Accounting unit, they apply techniques such as cost accounting, cash flow analysis and budgetary control to solve business problems and inform decisions.
  • Judgement: Criteria that begin with assess, recommend or justify test reasoning. The Strategy unit asks learners to recommend and justify a strategic option a business could implement, so a list of options is not enough. The Human Resources unit asks them to assess the relationship between business strategy and people management.
  • Creating and communicating: The Business Start-up unit asks learners to produce a business plan and then demonstrate effective communication when seeking stakeholder support, which they do in a 10-minute presentation. The Marketing unit also includes a presentation, where learners discuss how to measure marketing effectiveness and suggest improvements.

UK Equivalence and Recognition of OTHM Level 5 Diploma:

Learners and employers usually ask the same two things about a UK qualification: what level it sits at, and who stands behind it. The next two sections answer both.

Equivalent to HND and Year 2 of a UK Degree Programme:

The Level 5 Diploma sits at the same academic level as two well-known UK qualifications, and it carries the volume to match.

  • Equivalent to an HND and Year 2 of a UK degree: The diploma represents practical knowledge, skills, capabilities and competences that are assessed, in academic terms, as equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND) and to Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree. It therefore matches the level of the second year of a degree, which is why learners can use it as a recognised step towards further study.
  • A full-size qualification, not a short course: The comparison describes the level of learning, meaning the depth of analysis and application expected. With 120 credits and 1,200 hours of Total Qualification Time across six mandatory units, the diploma is a full-size qualification at that level. For employers and universities, the level signals that the holder is expected to compare, assess and justify, not only to recall.

Benefits of Studying the OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business Management:

Online Learning

Learn by Applying, Not Memorising:

Each unit asks you to put ideas to work, such as running a SWOT or PESTLE analysis on a business, applying budgeting techniques to a problem, or drafting a business plan. The marking criteria for every unit are set out in the assignment brief.

No Examination

Assessed Without Sit-In Exams:

Your results come from written assignments and two short presentations, so no single exam day decides the outcome. Every unit is graded Pass or Fail against fixed criteria.

Ofqual Regulated, UK Qualification:

OTHM is approved and regulated by Ofqual, and this diploma has been regulated since September 2022. You can look up qualification number 610/1527/1 on the Register of Regulated Qualifications to confirm it.

Six Units - Core Business Disciplines:

This diploma covers strategy, people management, marketing, law, management accounting and starting a business. Together the six mandatory units add up to 120 credits and 1,200 hours of total qualification time.

Equivalent to HND in the UK:

In academic terms, OTHM places this diploma alongside a UK Higher National Diploma. At 120 credits, it is a complete qualification and not a short add-on.

Equivalent to Year 2 of a UK Degree:

The depth of study matches Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree, so you compare, assess and justify business decisions instead of only describing them.

A Route Into Year 3 of a Degree:

As an Ofqual-regulated qualification, it makes you eligible for direct entry into the final year of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree. Universities set their own terms, so confirm yours in writing before you apply.

Next Step: OTHM Level 6 Diploma:

Completing this diploma opens the way to the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Business Management, which covers leadership, research, operations, finance, sustainability and strategic HR. This diploma meets its entry requirement.

Career Progression:

Use what you learn to take on more responsibility in team leadership, HR, marketing or administration, or to start planning a venture of your own. The unit content is practical, so it is easy to connect to your daily work.

Progression and Career Opportunities After Completion:

A one-year diploma should lead somewhere, and the Level 5 Diploma has three routes: the next OTHM level, a UK degree and work.

Progression to OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Business Management:

  • Completing the diploma gives learners the opportunity for a wide range of academic progressions, including the OTHM Level 6 Diploma in Business Management.
  • The Level 6 diploma has six mandatory units: Leadership and People Management, Business Research Project, Operations Management, Financial Decision Making, Sustainable Business Practices and Strategic Human Resource Management. It carries 120 credits, 1,200 hours of total qualification time and 480 guided learning hours, and OTHM assesses it in academic terms as equivalent to Bachelor’s degree level.
  • Entry to Level 6 requires a relevant Level 5 diploma or an equivalent qualification, or mature learner status with management experience, and learners must be 18 or older. Therefore, the Level 5 Diploma matches the entry requirement directly. Level 6 then leads to Level 7 Diplomas or direct entry into relevant Master’s degree programmes.

University Progression to Year 3 of a UK Bachelor’s Degree:

Completing the Level 5 Diploma opens a route to a UK Bachelor’s degree, and the points below explain how that route works.

  • Because the diploma is approved and regulated by Ofqual, learners are eligible to gain direct entry into Year 3 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree programme, which means they can aim to join the final year of a degree.
  • OTHM has progression arrangements with several UK universities. These universities acknowledge learners with Level 3 to Level 7 qualifications as candidates to be considered for advanced entry into the matching degree year or top-up programme.
  • The word considered matters, because each university applies its own entry rules and decides the exemptions it gives, so entry is not automatic at every university.
  • Learners who want a degree pathway should check the University Progressions page on the OTHM website, choose the programme they want and confirm the entry terms with that university in writing.
  • English language evidence deserves the same check, because many progression universities may not accept alternative English tests, and learners are responsible for confirming this with the receiving university. Therefore, anyone planning a degree pathway should check the university’s English requirement before choosing how to prove their English.

Why Choose Eduskills Training as Your OTHM Centre in UAE:

Because OTHM registers learners only through approved centres, the centre you choose is part of the decision when you study the Level 5 Diploma.

OTHM Approved Centre Status in the United Arab Emirates:

Eduskills Training has been approved by OTHM to deliver its qualifications in the UAE. That status matters because OTHM does not accept registrations from learners directly, and every learner must be registered through an approved delivery centre. Approval also places the centre inside OTHM’s quality system, where assessors mark learner work, the centre quality assures that marking, and OTHM verifies the outcomes externally. The result is independent confirmation that standards are applied consistently.

Learners should still confirm approval before paying any centre, because approval belongs to the centre and not to the qualification. Asking for written confirmation of OTHM approval is a reasonable request and takes little time.

Learner Support from Enrolment to Final Assessment:

We support every learner from the first enquiry to the final assessment decision.

  • Before registration, we check each applicant’s qualifications or work experience and English language evidence against OTHM’s entry profile.
  • We register each learner with OTHM using the learner’s own personal email address, as OTHM requires.
  • After registration, we receive the assignment briefs, and each brief carries the guidance and marking criteria for its unit, so learners know what is expected from the first week.
  • Our tutors and assessors give both formative and summative feedback, as OTHM requires.
  • Formative feedback comes before any final judgement, we keep it prompt, and learners get time to act on it.
  • We track progress unit by unit against each assessment criterion, which shows which assessments are still outstanding.
  • Each assessor decision is checked through internal verification at the centre, and OTHM verifies the results externally.

How to Enroll in OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Business in UAE:

Enrolment follows the entry requirements closely, so it saves time to gather your evidence before you apply for the Level 5 Diploma.

Documents and Evidence Needed for Learner Registration:

The documents we ask for depend on the route you qualify through. Most applicants should prepare the following:

  • A copy of a valid passport or ID.
  • Your Level 4 Diploma, A level results or equivalent certificates, if you qualify through academic study.
  • A current CV, a job description and an employer letter showing relevant management experience, if you are over 21 and qualify through experience.
  • A CEFR B2, PTE Academic or IELTS result, or proof that you studied in English for the final two years of school, if you are not from a majority English-speaking country.
  • Your full name, date of birth, gender, nationality, address, mobile number and personal email address, which OTHM needs to register you.

We review experience evidence before registration, as OTHM requires. Qualifications from outside the UK are common among UAE applicants, so please send your copies early. We then confirm whether they count as equivalent before you pay any fees.

Step by Step Enrolment Process:

  1. Send an enquiry to Eduskills Training with your qualifications or work history and your preferred study mode.
  2. We review your qualification or experience and your English language evidence against OTHM’s entry profile.
  3. You submit your documents and confirm your intake.
  4. You pay the fees, and we register you with OTHM. OTHM advises centres to register learners early, normally before one third of the planned programme has passed.
  5. Once you are registered, the assignment briefs become available to us, and you attend your first class, where we explain how the coursework and presentations will run.

Employment Pathways in Business and Management Roles:

The OTHM Level 5 Diploma is an excellent foundation for a career in a range of organisations, and it is intended for people who have started, or plan to move into, a career in private or public sector business. Because the six units cover different business functions, the roles below are grouped by career area. They are examples, and job titles and entry requirements vary by employer, so learners should match the units they have completed to the requirements of each role.

  • Management and operations: Team leader, department coordinator and business administrator roles draw on the strategy unit and on the management focus of the whole diploma.
  • Human resources: HR assistant, HR coordinator, recruitment coordinator and training coordinator roles draw on the Management of Human Resources unit, which covers recruitment and selection, training and development, and employee welfare.
  • Marketing and customers: Marketing coordinator, market research assistant and customer service roles draw on Marketing for Managers, which covers market research, campaign planning and customer retention.
  • Finance and budgeting: Budget, cost and finance support roles draw on Management Accounting and Decision Making, which covers cost accounting, cash flow analysis and budgetary control.
  • Contracts and compliance: Contract and compliance support roles draw on Business Law for Managers, which covers contract law, consumer law and how a business can resolve legal disputes.
  • Entrepreneurship: Founders and co-founders of a new business draw on the Business Start-up unit, which ends with a business plan covering an executive summary, industry overview, market and competition analysis, sales and marketing plan, management plan, operating plan and financial plan. That plan can become the base for a real venture.

Frequent Asked Questions (FAQs):

Is the Level 5 Diploma Regulated by Ofqual in the UK?

Is the OTHM Level 5 Diploma Equal to an HND in the UK?

OTHM states that its Level 5 Diplomas are assessed, in academic terms, as equivalent to an HND and Year 2 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree. The comparison describes the level of learning, not the length of study.

How Many Units, Credits and Hours Does the Diploma Have?

It has six mandatory units, 120 credits, 1,200 hours of Total Qualification Time and a recommended minimum of 600 Guided Learning Hours. Each unit carries 20 credits, 200 TQT hours and 100 guided hours.

It is assessed by coursework only, with no exams. Marketing for Managers and Business Start-up also include a presentation, and every unit is graded Pass or Fail.

How Does Criterion Referenced Pass or Fail Grading Work?

There is no merit or distinction. To pass a unit, a learner must meet every learning outcome and every assessment criterion, and one missing criterion means the unit is not passed.

Who Verifies Assessment Decisions on This Qualification?

Eduskills training’s assessor judges the work, the centre quality assures it internally, and OTHM verifies it externally. Results stay provisional until the Internal Verifier and the External Quality Assurer confirm them.

Can the Diploma Lead to Year 3 of a UK Bachelor’s Degree?

OTHM states that learners are eligible to gain direct entry into Year 3 of a three-year UK Bachelor’s degree. Each university decides the entry terms and any exemptions, so confirm them with the receiving university.
